WHAT IS CITY OF LAKELAND SOLAR HOT WATER SERVICE?
It is a way to have clean, green, efficient solar heated water in your home without paying for any of the expensive equipment or installation up front—an investment then you can save your family money for years to come.
WHO OWNS THE EQUIPMENT YOU INSTALL IN MY HOUSE?
The solar collector, hot water tank, and other parts belong to Lakeland Electric Solar Hot Water Service and PosiGen of Florida LLC, a company that specializes in solar power. Lakeland Electric and the City of Lakeland have signed a long term contract to make the service possible. The solar hot water service is responsible for all maintenance of the solar hot water system
HOW LONG AFTER I ENROLL WILL YOU INSTALL THE SYSTEM?
Your installation should take place within 3-6 weeks. Someone over 18 needs to be at home to give our licensed installation professionals access.
CAN ANYONE IN LAKELAND GET SOLAR HOT WATER SERVICE?
There are 3 qualifications for the service.
You must be a Lakeland Electric customer
You must own your house
There must be roof space with an unobstructed southern exposure (just tell us your address and we’ll check for you).
HOW MUCH DOES THE CITY OF LAKELAND SOLAR HOT WATER SERVICE COST?
You pay just $34.95 each month. The amount is billed on your monthly Lakeland Electric statement.
HOW MUCH DOES IT REALLY COST?
You pay just $34.95 a month. There are no up front costs, service or installation fees.
HOW LONG IS MY SERVICE COMMITMENT?
Your service contract and the monthly price of $34.95 lasts for 20 years.
IS $34.95 A MONTH AN INTRODUCTORY PRICE?
No. There is no ‘gotcha’ with a higher fee once you enroll. The monthly price of $34.95 is locked-in for 20 years.
IS THERE A CANCELLATION FEE?
Yes. You will be charged $250 for early termination equipment removal. This does not apply when you sell your home. In fact you can pass along your rate to the new owner.
I DON'T OWN MY HOUSE, BUT I STILL PAY MY OWN ELECTRIC BILL. CAN I GET A SOLAR HOT WATER SERVICE?
The Solar Hot Water Service is for Lakeland homeowners but landlords of rental properties can subscribe to the service.
HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY WILL I SAVE?
Typically around 20% of the electricity used by an average family of four goes to heating water.
HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I SAVE?
Over the term of the service agreement, Solar Hot Water Service can easily save a family of four or mare a substantial amount. But these savings build over time and also depend on how much electricity you generally use for water heating, and how much the cost of conventional energy goes up in the future.
WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THE SYSTEM?
The Solar Hot Water Service will take care of all repairs, maintenance and replacement of your hot water tank, solar collector, and other system parts.
WILL THE SOLAR COLLECTOR ON MY ROOF WITHSTAND A HURRICANE?
The solar collector and its mounting to your roof are designed to withstand hurricane force winds.
WHAT IF THERE IS NO SUN?
Solar Hot Service includes an 80-gallon tank, usually more than enough to get you through the night or a rainy day. If there is less solar energy to heat your water, the system will use a small amount of electricity to supplement your hot water needs.
